High-resolution high-energy X-ray absorption spectroscopy technique

at ESRF

FAME-UHD (French Absorption spectroscopy beamline in Material and Environmental science – Ultra High Dilution) is dedicated to Ultra High Dilution X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, for the study of trace elements in systems of environmental, chemical or biological interest. EXAFS analyses can be carried out at concentrations of the order of 10ppm, and XANES analyses at sub-ppm concentrations. To do this, we use a spectrometer made up of curved analyzer crystals. This type of high-resolution detector enables the research carried out on the instrument to progress in two directions:

  • Main optical elements:
    • 1st collimating mirror (Rh-coated Si mirror),
    • 2-crystal monochromator (Si220, 1st crystal cooled with liquid nitrogen, 2nd crystal focusing horizontally),
    • 2nd focusing mirror (Rh-coated Si mirror)
  • Beam characteristics on sample: 200×100µm2 (FWHM), flux of the order of 5.1011 photons/s
  • Detector: spectrometer with 14 analyzing crystals
