“High entropy materials : New Approaches in Materials Science: High-Throughput Methods, Machine Learning, and High-Entropy”
on 25th November 2024.
This day is devoted to high-entropy materials, a new family of materials distinguished by the combination of five or more elements, mixed in equal proportions, leading to unique properties. High-entropy alloys and oxides have exceptional characteristics, particularly in terms of mechanical strength, thermal stability and electrical conductivity, making them promising for a variety of technological applications, particularly in the hydrogen field. A notable feature of these materials is the cocktail effect, which results from the high chemical complexity and leads to improved or novel functional properties. However, selecting the optimum compositions is a major challenge because of the immense number of possible combinations – millions, even billions of possibilities. It is therefore essential to adopt high-throughput methods for the synthesis and characterisation of these materials. In addition, numerical modelling and machine learning play a crucial role in predicting properties and guiding experiments, accelerating the discovery of new high-entropy materials.
